Second Start Subsidy
The Second Start Subsidy was introduced by TRNT Off The Track to support licensed trainers and racehorse owners in the Northern Territory who are committed to responsibly rehoming their retired Thoroughbreds.
Retraining is a critical step in helping Thoroughbreds transition from a racing environment to a new purpose, whether that be in a performance role, as a pleasure horse, or as a companion. It allows horses to adapt to new routines, develop new skills, and meet the expectations of their future owners. Thoroughbreds that undergo professional retraining are significantly more appealing to potential buyers and adopters, promoting responsible rehoming practices.
What the Subsidy Offers
Under the Second Start Subsidy, licensed TRNT trainers or NT racehorse owners can apply for financial support to offset the cost of retraining services. TRNT Off The Track will provide a 50/50 financial contribution toward retraining costs, up to a maximum of $1,500 per horse.
For example:
- If the cost of retraining a horse for six weeks is $2,880, TRNT Off The Track will contribute $1,500, with the trainer or owner covering the remaining $1,380.
Eligibility and Conditions
To ensure the program supports the best outcomes for horses, the following conditions apply:
- The subsidy is exclusively available to licensed TRNT trainers or NT racehorse owners.
- Retraining services must be provided by a TRNT-recognised Educator or a PRA-recognised Retrainer.
- A maximum of 10 horses may access financial support in 2025, on a "first in, best dressed" basis.
- Trainers or owners must submit a written request to TRNT Off The Track to apply for the subsidy.
Supporting the Future of Retired Thoroughbreds
By providing financial assistance for retraining, TRNT Off The Track is making it easier for retired Thoroughbreds to find their second start and thrive in new roles. This initiative demonstrates TRNT Off The Track’s commitment to horse welfare and responsible rehoming practices.
