General: Stewards today interviewed apprentice jockey Lek Maloney and his host trainer (in care) Chris Pollard in relation to the circumstances leading to the apprentice failing to fulfil his riding engagements at the Alice Springs Turf Club race meeting on Sunday 15 September, 2024.

It was established that after Lek Maloney rode at the Darwin race meeting on 14 September and staying at the Novotel Airport Hotel overnight, he arrived at the airport terminal on Sunday 15 September after the check in closed and missed the flight. He could offer no plausible explanation for his actions.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge under AR227(a) for negligence that led to a breach of the Rules. The specifics being that his negligence in missing the abovementioned flight led to a breach of AR127(a) of failing to fulfil 6 riding engagements. As a result LUNAR SOLAR (R3), LAMOREE (R4), TALES OF CONFLICT (R5) & VITESSE BREEZE (R6) were all declared late withdrawals as no substitute riders were available.

Stewards fined apprentice Lek Maloney the sum of $500. In assessing the level of this fine it was also taken into account he was ordered to reimburse TRNT the amount of $1297.65 for the cost of the initial missed flight and a further booking for his return to Alice Springs on a later date.
