General: All acceptors for the Palmerston Sprint were subject to a veterinary examination on Thursday 1 August, 2024 and blood samples were collected for the purpose of out of competition testing.

 

Race 1: Silks Darwin Mile 0-66 – 1600m

Stewards interviewed trainer K Healy in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.

GLOBAL WONDER (J Todd) – Unsettled in the gates, commenced awkwardly and dipped on jumping losing several lengths. Raced wide from the 500m. Rider advised that the gelding resented the kickback after being struck in the head by a clod near the 600m.

GRINZINGER BISHOP (A Sweeney) – Resaddled behind the barriers.

MUSELET (K Yuill) – Commenced awkwardly and shifted out abruptly losing ground.

Race 2: Administrator’s Cup 0-58 – 1300m

BRIMARVI ROOBOY (K Yuill) – Crowded, bumped and steadied when tightened shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout.

RISING FIRE (J Lyon) – Steadied from heels when racing keenly near the 700m and then raced wide thereafter.

GIFT OF GOLD (A Nicholls) – The veterinarian reported the gelding returned with blood in the mouth from a loose tooth.

SWEET AS SCANDI (M Pegus) – Rider reported that his mount lay outwards through running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near hind leg. Trainer K Lamprecht was advised that he must present a veterinary clearance for the mare prior to racing again.

LORD FENRIR (E Lines) – Shifted inwards near the 150m.

TO THE POINT (C Hunter) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout.

TYQUENDO (J Hampson) – Shifted inwards under pressure near the 100m.

BEL SUONO (J Todd) – Raced in restricted room and steadied near the 100m. The veterinarian reported the mare returned with a corneal ulceration.

EXTREME EMOTION (A Sweeney) – Threw its head on jumping. Raced in restricted room and steadied near the 150m.

General - On inquiry it was established that near the 150m LORD FENRIR (E Lines) shifted in slightly resulting in EXTREME EMOTION (A Sweeney) being crowded for room and steadied. Apprentice E Lines was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

On inquiry it was established that near the 100m TYQUENDO (J Hampson) shifted in slightly resulting in BEL SUONO (J Todd) being crowded for room and steadied. Apprentice J Hampson was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

Race 3: Mintbet Maiden SW – 1200m

GO BARNEY GO (M Pegus) – Commenced awkwardly and contacted the barrier partition.

PALENTINO ROSSI (V Arnott) – Slow into stride. Raced wide throughout.

RIP EDITION (J Hampson) – Brushed the running rail near the 700m.

SHEEZEL (A Nicholls) – Difficult to load. Fractious in the barriers. Reared at the start and shifted outwards abruptly losing ground. Trainer N Dyer was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding in relation to its barrier manners.

HELL FIRE MISS (J Lyon) – Raced wide from the 700m. Momentarily steadied off heels near the 100m.

LEAN ON ME (A Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly losing ground.

VALKUR (J Todd) – Raced keenly rounding the first turn.

YOUR SHOUT GINGIE (S Tsaikos) – Shifted outwards when tested with the whip passing the 200m and then shifted out significantly when under pressure over the final 100m.

Race 4: Vale John Russell Handicap 0-66 – 1200m

POMPEII EMPIRE (I Luximon) – Commenced awkwardly.

DEMBE (S Logan) – Bumped with another runner on jumping.

NOBLE MAGNATE (N Callow) – Bumped with another runner on jumping. Raced wide throughout.

BOY BIG (J Hampson) – Slow into stride. Bumped with another runner on jumping.

DIP ME LID (A Sweeney) – Commenced to race wide from the 1000m. Reluctant to stride out when urged along in the early and middle stages.

Race 5: bet365 Class 2 Four and Five-Year-Old Plate – 1100m

Stewards interviewed trainer K Petrick in relation to the riding instructions she intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.

DUMMY SPIT (N Callow) – Rider reported that the gelding had attempted to buck for one stride near the 1000m but raced tractably for the remainder of the event. Trainer A Perdon was advised that a warning would be placed on its record.

LORD GEORGE (M Pegus) – Gates were marginally slow to open. Raced wide throughout.

SOONALI (D Gillett) – Struck the rail of its own accord near the 700m and then mistrode.

FLASH FIORENTE (A Nicholls) – Rider advised that the gelding resented the kick back when racing to the first turn and got its head in the air having to be restrained passing the 700m.

THE KID (J Hampson) – Commenced awkwardly.

AUGUSTA MOON (J Lyon) – Shifted outwards off heels at the 250m to obtain clear running.

NASTY STREAK (K Yuill) – Slow into stride. Bumped with another runner on jumping.

STORY OF STELLA (S Logan) – Bounded slightly on jumping.

HADRIAN’S WALL (E Lines) – Rider dropped her offside rein passing the 100m and commenced to shift outwards under pressure over the final 50m.

Race 6: bet365 Handicap 0-62 – 1000m

CAPTAIN GEORGE (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly. Held up from the 500m to the 400m and was taken outwards to obtain clear running.

HELLIVIT (P Denton) – Bounded on jumping. Raced wide throughout.

SIBERIAN LARCH (E Lines) – Bumped with another runner on jumping.

IRASCIBLE MISS (C Hunter) - Bumped with another runner on jumping. Lay outwards rounding the home turn.

Race 7: bet365 Palmerston Sprint – 1200m

Stewards interviewed trainer’s P Cole and G Clarke in relation to the riding instructions they intended to issue as each stable had multiple runners in the event.

Stewards considered a protest lodged by Mr P Cole trainer of the fourth placed STAR MAGNUM against the third placed IDEAS MAN ridden by Jockey M Pegus alleging interference prior to straightening. It was established prior to straightening that STAR MAGNUM shifted outwards slightly and contacted the hindquarters of IDEAS MAN and accordingly it had not caused interference to STAR MAGNUM and in those circumstances, Stewards dismissed the protest.

IDEAS MAN (M Pegus) – Contacted on the hindquarters by another runner prior to straightening.

STAR MAGNUM (E Lines) – Fractious in the barriers. Commenced awkwardly. Contacted another runner prior to straightening.

SPACESHIP (J Todd) – Bumped with another runner shortly after the start, became unbalanced and was steadied. When questioned regarding performance, the rider reported that after receiving this interference his mount raced keenly until the 600m and did not finish the race off as anticipated. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

KERIOTH (K Yuill) – Fractious in the barriers and reared on a number of occasions prior to the start. Raced wide throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the off fore. Trainer C Pollard was advised that he must present a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to racing again.

CIELO D’ORO (I Luximon) – Shifted inwards on jumping. Ridden vigorously out of the barriers to obtain a forward position and when being straightened by its rider, bumped with another runner shortly after the start.

General - On inquiry it was established that CIELO D’ORO (I Luximon) had jumped inwards on jumping and when being straightened by its rider shortly after the start, shifted outwards slightly and contacted the hindquarters of SPACESHIP (J Todd) causing it to be become unbalanced with its rider having to steady his mount. Stewards were satisfied that no rider had ridden carelessly in this incident and accordingly took the matter no further.

1ST EARLY CROW 2ND LUMBER PUNK 3RD  IDEAS MAN

 

General:

Post-race swab samples taken from all winners, LUMBER PUNK & IDEAS MAN (R7).

Pre-race samples were taken from: EQUAL BALANCE, MUSELET, EXTREME EMOTION, STEAL THE FIELD, ENUFF RED, HELL FIRE MISS, DEMBE, LORD GEORGE, THE KID, FLASH FIORENTE and all runners engaged in Race 7.

All riders were breath tested for the presence of alcohol prior to riding.

Reprimands:

Race 1 – Apprentice Jockey E Lines, reprimanded for a whip breach, AR132(7)(a)(ii).

Race 2 – Jockey J Lyon, reprimanded for a whip breach, AR132(7)(a)(ii).

Race 6 – Apprentice Jockey D Gillett, reprimanded for a whip breach, AR132(7)(a)(ii).

Suspensions: Nil

Fines:

Race 2 – Apprentice Jockey J Hampson, fined $200 for a whip breach, AR132(7)(a)(ii).

Race 7 – Trainer P Cole, fined $300 for lodging a protest which, in the opinion of the Stewards was frivolous, AR219(5).
