Race 2: JJ’S WASTE AND RECYCLING 0-58 HANDICAP 1200m

Following the completion of this event the Stewards weighed in the riders of all placegetters, but correct weight was not given and an inquiry was immediately opened into the circumstances of the start. All riders were interviewed in addition to the starter and the patrol vision was also analysed. It was established that when the starter activated the hydraulic starting mechanism, there was a malfunction and the gates did not open. Seven runners lunged forward and struck the front gates with varying degrees of force. REAL DIVINE (P Denton) and TINTERN POWER (S Tsaikos) also got their heads down in the barriers in this incident. The starter then manoeuvred himself into position to effect a manual start but in doing so, had his back to the field. When the gates were released REAL DIVINE was riderless and apprentice J Hampson (MIRACOLI) did not have hold of her reins. S Tsaikos restrained his mount as he was concerned about the gelding’s welfare after the initial lunge at the gates. Shortly after the start apprentices D Stanley (DELAGO LAD) checked his mount to avoid the heels of the riderless REAL DIVINE. Apprentice L Maloney (FUTURE DREAMS) and jockey S Logan (OMOPLATA) both also restrained their mounts shortly after the start given the circumstances occurring around them. It was further established that jockeys starting from barriers 5 to 10 did not hear the call from the starter that he was going to effect a manual start and therefore were not prepared when the gates opened. After considering all the circumstances of this occurrence and in particular the fact that only 4 runners were ridden competitively and finished the race, the Stewards declared the race be void acting under AR205, with all bets refunded. The hydraulic barrier starting mechanism was tested prior to the next race. Stewards will review the starting procedures in an endeavour to mitigate the risk of a similar incident occurring in future.
