General: All acceptors for the Darwin Cup were subject to a veterinary examination on Friday 4 July 2023 and blood samples were collected for the purpose of out of competition testing.
The following horses that competed on Saturday 5 August 2023 underwent a pre-race veterinary examination upon arrival on course prior to racing –
Race 4 CUDJERIE, EL MAGNIFICENCE
Race 8 LADY TUCAN, LOOKING FOR YOU, NOKONDI.
Race 1: SCHWEPPES Sprint 0-70 Handicap – 1200m
Stewards reviewed the start of the race prior to confirming correct weight.
PRINCE OF MERCIA (K Yuill) – Bounded on jumping. Raced wide throughout.
THROW AT DA STUMPS (P Denton) –
MISTER MONARO (A Darmanin) – Knuckled badly as the start was effected unbalancing and dislodging the rider.
1ST CANTON KID 2ND PRINCE OF MERCIA 3RD THROW AT DA STUMPS
Jockey A. Darmanin was examined by the paramedics and declared fit to continue riding.
Race 2: Darwin Racing TROBIS 0-58 Handicap – 1200m
BRAZILLIANT (M Pegus) – Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout and lay outwards through the middle stages.
YE HELLA (E Lines) – Bumped at the start.
ZOU DER ZEE (P Shiers) – Buffeted between runners at the start.
MOTIVATED MISS (V Arnott) – Bumped at the start.
HIDDEN PRINCESS (A Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped heavily at the start.
WHITTEN (W Davis) – Raced wide for the majority of the race.

Race 3: TAB We’re On 0-66 Handicap – 1100m
CYCLONITE (M Pegus) – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have a laceration to the near fore.
IREMEMBERWHEN (C Hunter) – Lay outwards from approaching the home turn.
SEDONA (J Keating) – Raced wide throughout.
NOBLE WAR (P Shiers) – Dwelt at the start losing several lengths.
REAL VALENTIA (E Lines) – Proved difficult to load and fractious in the barrier. Raced wide from on straightening.
HARD TO EXCEL (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly and dipped. When questioned regarding unplaced performance rider advised that due to the incident at the start, he was obliged to ride vigorously to maintain a forward position in the early and middle stages and consequently his mount was under pressure prior to straightening. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have returned with an elevated heart rate.
BEATBOX (A Sweeney) – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have returned lame in the off fore and a veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.
CHIEF MONDO (A Lindsay) – Raced wide throughout.

Race 4: Simone Montgomerie Lightning Plate – 1000m
Stewards interviewed trainer G. Clarke in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.
EXPERT WITNESS (P Shiers) – Late Scratching at 10.41am on veterinary advice following a stabling mishap resulting in the gelding incurring lacerations to both hind and near fore legs.
CUDJERIE (A Nicholls) – Raced wide throughout.
EL MAGNIFICENCE (S. Wiseman) – Raced wide from the 600m.
RISING SPHERE (D Tourneur) – Carried inwards and steadied passing the 700m.
DAMASCUS MOMENT (W Davis) – Tightened and restrained passing the 700m.
MADAM MISCHIEF (K Yuill) – Slow to muster early speed.
General - On inquiry Apprentice E. Lines (NIEWAND) pleaded guilty to a charge of engaging in careless in careless riding under the provisions of AR131 (a) with the specifics being that whilst riding her mount along she permited the gelding to shift inwards when not clear of runners to her inside passing the 700m, carrying RISING SPHERE inwards causing DAMASCUS MOMENT to be tightened and restrained. Apprentice E. Lines had her licence to ride in races suspended for 1 NT meeting to expire after Saturday 12 August 2023 and in addition was fined $300.

Race 5: Australian Turf Club 0-58 Handicap – 1600m
Stewards interviewed trainer N. Dyer in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.
SUPREMO (W Davis) – Commenced awkwardly.
ZOU ZOU KACANARKIS (P Shiers) – Lay outwards under pressure from the 200m.
EQUAL BALANCE (E Lines) – Rider reported that over concluding stages when attempting to draw her whip it became entangled in the reins causing her to fumble it.
LATEST BENTLEY (A Sweeney) – Bounded at the start unbalancing the rider. Raced wide throughout.
ZOURISKY (A Lindsay) – Commenced awkwardly striking the barrier petition. Raced keenly rounding the first turn.
BEL SUONO (J Todd) – Lay inwards near the 250m. Impeded from the heels of another runner passing the 200m.
General - On inquiry it was established that entering the home straight BEL SUONO lay inwards with the rider changing the whip to his left hand near the 250 and near the 200m when continuing to lay inwards, became impeded from the heels of ZOU ZOU KACANARKIS which shifted outwards under pressure. Jockey P Shiers was advised to show more care when shifting ground in future.

Race 6: G H Mumm BMNT Handicap – 1600m
GRINZINGER STAR (J Keating) – Bumped at the start.
INFLUENTIAL JACK (J Todd) – Following the unplaced performance a post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
KOMACHI (C Hunter) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide throughout. Bumped by another runner when tiring near the 50m and became unbalanced.
HETTINGER (A Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly. Lay inwards in the straight and bumped near the 50m.
TUBTHUMPER (W Davis) – When questioned rider advised that the mare had attained a favourable position and had travelled comfortably until the 700m, however felt uncomfortable in its action and lost considerable ground from thereon. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 7: Magic Millions BMNT Handicap – 1300m
Prior to correct weight, the rider of 4th placed BENCH PRESS (S. Tsaikos) viewed the replay of the race in the home straight and decided not to take any further action and accordingly correct weight was declared.
MUNSTER (A Sweeney) – Steadied when racing keenly near the 1000m. Steadied again when racing keenly in restricted room leaving the 700m and shifted outwards across heels having to be restrained near the 650m. Raced wide from the 500m. When questioned rider advised that his mount had refused to settle and was awkwardly placed between runners and he had been obliged to restrain it outwards across heels losing ground as a result.
BENCH PRESS (S Tsaikos) – Impeded from heels when attempting to improve from the 125m.
VERSETTO (A Nicholls) – Shifted inwards under pressure approaching the 100m.
STAGE FRONT (K Yuill) – Shifted outwards under pressure from the 150m.
MATHEMATICS (P Shiers) – Raced wide throughout and bumped at the 650m.

Race 8: Ladbroke It 0-62 Handicap – 1300m
Stewards interviewed trainer P. Cole in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.
FIRST CRUSADE (P Shiers) – Slow into stride. Raced wide throughout.
RISING FIRE (M Pegus) – Raced wide from on straightening.
SUPER FAMOUS (A Nicholls) – Bumped at the start.
LOOKING FOR YOU (V Arnott) – Raced wide from the 600m.
NOKONDI (C Hunter) – Bumped at the start.

Race 9: Silks Darwin BMNT Handicap – 2050m
GREAT DIVINER (J Todd) – Raced keenly in the early stages getting its head in the air. Taken outwards and raced wide from the 700m.
IRONEDGE (A Lindsay) – Held up passing the 400m.
COMMAND KING (S Tsaikos) – Raced wide throughout.
VENTING (P Denton) – Made heavy contact with the running rail when completing the preliminary and after undergoing a veterinary examination behind the barriers was cleared to compete.
WICKED ADDICTION (W Davis) – Bumped at the start.
ALL HARD WOOD (A Nicholls) – Bumped at the start. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
FREDDY THE EAGLE (S Wiseman) – Bounded on jumping.
KIPPAX (C Hunter) – Shifted inwards under pressure leaving the 100m with the rider having to stop riding and straighten her mount over the concluding stages.
FIERCE LEGEND (A Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly. Returned with blood in its mouth from a laceration.

Race 10: Great Northern Darwin Cup – 2050m
Stewards interviewed trainer G. Clarke in relation to the riding instructions he intended to issue as the stable had multiple runners in the event.
NOIR DE RUE (V Arnott) – When questioned with regard to the unplaced performance, rider advised that although she was unable to position her mount as forward as anticipated the gelding travelled comfortably through the early and middle stages but when ridden along from the 600m failed to quicken and in her opinion raced in a flat manner. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.
GRANDSLAM (J Allen) – Raced keenly passing the 1700m.
MOHICAN HIEGHTS (A Sweeney) – Commenced awkwardly unbalancing its rider. Raced wide in the early stages.
SANBLAS (A Nicholls) – Raced wide throughout.
KAONIC (S Tsaikos) – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off fore and a veterinary clearance will be required prior to racing again.
VALLABAR (D Tourneur) – Bounded on jumping.

General
All riders were breath tested for the detection of alcohol.
Post-race swab samples taken from all winners and Race 10 SANBLAS (2nd) & WOLFBURN (3rd). Pre-race samples were taken from YE HELLA, HIDDEN PRINCESS, CHIEF MONDO, JUST STROLLING, IREMEMBERWHEN, CYCLONITE, DAMASCUS MOMENT, TENG HUI FENGLI and all runner engaged in race 10.
