As runners were being loaded into the barriers, RHYTHMICAL broke through the front of the barriers and galloped riderless for two laps. The gelding then turned and began to canter in a clockwise direction towards the 1600m chute. As the Clerk of the Course (Ms Alice Bird) made an attempt to reach over and capture the gelding, both horses began to gain speed and subsequently the Clerk was dislodged at the 1600m chute. Paramedics were quickly to the scene to attend.
As there was an indefinite delay, runners behind the barriers were sent back to the mounting yard and unsaddled.
Ms Bird was stabilized by the paramedics as a second ambulance arrived and took her to hospital for observation. As a result of this delay, the remaining races were rescheduled as follows:
Race 2 4:40
Race 3 5:10
Race 4 5:40
Prior to these runners again being saddled for this race, a veterinary examination of all runners was conducted with all runners cleared to start.
A subsequent report on Ms Bird is that she had suffered no major injuries other than a small laceration to her head and was released from hospital the following day.
