W Kerford explained that after commencing awkwardly and pushing his mount along for the majority of the race, he was of the opinion that the gelding was not going to improve his position when straightening up. AWESOME MO (R Vigar) – Ridden hard early to secure the lead.
QUE PASA (L Crow) – Raced wide throughout.
General: Stewards questioned jockey R Vigar (AWESOME MO) and apprentice D Morgan (CHOPSTICKS) as to their riding instructions after both riders went head to head leading the rest of the field by a considerable margin during running. R Vigar explained that he had been instructed to lead and rode the gelding vigorously from the start to do so. He advised that after obtaining the lead his mount was challenged by CHOPSTICKS leaving the 1200m and both runners raced strongly together through the middle stages and he consequently finished third in the event. He agreed with the Stewards view that he had erred in the circumstances by not attempting to settle his mount in the middle stages. Apprentice D Morgan’s explanation was similar in that he had been instructed to lead but when unable to, he claimed he attempted to ease his mount but was having difficulties in restraining the gelding. As a result CHOPSTICKS was under pressure prior to straightening and compounded in the straight. Stewards admonished apprentice D Morgan in regards to the manner in which he rode and his lack of initiative in failing to make a concerted effort to settle his mount and race at the girth of AWESOME MO during the middle stages which was a reasonable option in the circumstances. Stewards placed apprentice D Morgan on notice that further action may be taken in future, as this is the second occasion at recent race meetings that he has been spoken to in regards to failing to use his initiative and judgement when circumstances dictate a change to his riding instructions is required.
