All runners engaged in the Darwin Cup (race 9) underwent a veterinary examination on Friday 2 August, 2019 and were also subject to out of competition testing. REIBY THE RED displayed a level of lameness in the off fore and was therefore subject to further vet checks on Saturday 3 August, 2019 and again on race morning and was cleared to compete.
Race 1: 0-66 1100m
THE HUMMEL (B Huppatz) – Raced in restricted room between runners into the first turn and wide from the 700m.
MORAL OUTRAGE (T Treichel) – Raced wide throughout.
PATRIOT DAY (K Gladwin) – Lay outwards rounding the first turn. Returned with a laceration to the off hind leg.
BOLEK (S Tsaikos) – Raced wide throughout.
HATTAN MAN (V Arnott) – Bumped at the start. Resented the kickback and lay outwards and yielded ground from the 600m.
MOSSBELLE (S Wiseman) – Bumped at the start and then carried inwards and again bumped and unbalanced shortly after. Lay outwards in running. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained a laceration to the off fore cannon.
ANSINNA (C Spry) – Bumped and crowded shortly after the start.

Race 2: LIGHTNING PLATE 1000m
BROOKLYN (C Spry) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped. Raced wide throughout.
MOOT (R Vigar) – Bumped at the start.
POT BLACK (T Treichel) – Fractious prior to the start.
STREET LIFE (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly and crowded. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
SO STOIC (B Huppatz) – Fractious prior to the start. Raced wide throughout.

Race 3: 0-70 1200m
Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke regarding the riding instructions he intended to issue as his stable had multiple runners in the event.
MARBEL DUKE (C Spry) – Slow into stride. Steadied passing the 700m and raced wide from thereon.
MEAZZA (K Gladwin) – Raced wide from the 500m.
TAIPEI DANCER (V Arnott) – Bumped shortly after the start.
EASTWOOD (R Vigar) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped shortly after the start.
LOOKING FOR YOU (J Todd) – Lay outwards through the middle stages.

Race 4: 0-58 1100m
BON AIRE (C Spry) – Tightened for room and restrained at the 800m.
LOTS OF COIN (T Treichel) – Shifted away from another runner when laying inwards at the 800m and hampered another runner. Cast the near hind plate in running.
MY SNIP (S Fawke) – Raced wide throughout.
FIRE ‘N’ VICE (R Vigar) – Veered inwards at the start. Raced wide throughout.
OWENS (J Cartwright) – Lay inwards in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
1ST ROCKATOMIC 2ND VUNIVALU 3RD CLEESE
Race 5: BMNT 1300m
Stewards interviewed trainer G Lefoe (jnr) and P Cole regarding the riding instructions both intended to issue as their respective stables had multiple runners in the event.
FEDERAL COURT (S Fawke) underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers and when found to be lame in the off fore leg was declared a late scratching by order of the Stewards at 3.03pm. Stewards ruled that all bets placed on FEDERAL COURT were to be refunded and the following deductions were applicable to all winning bets placed prior to 3.03pm –
COMMISSAR 3c win 5c place
NICCOCO 6c place
AMERICAN MUSCLE 5c place
ARCTIC SONG (P Hall) – Failed to muster early speed and taken outwards to avoid the kickback and then raced wide in running. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in the near fore leg.
TYCOON DANCER (R Vigar) – Raced wide from the 600m.
MAKIN THE GRADE (S Tsaikos) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped.
MIGHTY TAX (J Todd) – Bumped at the start. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have returned with an elevated heart rate.
GRAMMAR BOY (B Davis) – Impeded for clear running in the early stages of the straight.
General – As apprentice M Aitken was overweight he was replaced as the rider of MAKIN’ THE GRADE by jockey S Tsaikos.
1ST COMMISSAR 2ND NICCOCO 3RD AMERICAN MUSCLE
Race 6: 0-62 1300m
TRYSTOFF (D Morgan) – Raced keenly into the first turn.
MCINTYRE (P Shiers) – Taken outwards from the 200m to secure clear running.
THE AUDITOR (K Gladwin) – Raced wide throughout.
HURRY HOME HARRY (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly and then crowded and bumped between runners at the start. When questioned regarding the unplaced performance rider advised that his mount failed to respond to his urgings at any stage in running and failed to work into the race. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities and a swab sample as taken from the gelding. Trainer P Cole subsequently advised that the gelding had recovered and worked well since the event and in his opinion may have not appreciated the kickback on the day. Stewards will monitor the gelding’s racing manner at future starts.
JAYEFFKAY (S Cahill) – Raced wide throughout. Bumped at the 100m.
WINSOR CUP (P Denton) – Bumped when under pressure passing the 100m.
TICKET TO PARIS (S Fawke) – Bumped at the start.
1ST TRYSTOFF 2ND RECORDING TO WIN 3RD COTILLION
Race 7: BMNT 1600m
Stewards interviewed trainer G Clarke regarding the riding instructions he intended to issue as his stable had multiple runners in the event.
JAVA (B Davis) – Bumped at the start.
ADATTO (J Cartwright) – Lay outwards when being ridden along to improve leaving the 500m and mistrode when checked from heels.
MAZZARO (R Vigar) – Fractious prior to the start. Raced keenly into the 1400m turn and wide throughout.
PAGHMAN (K Gladwin) – Commenced awkwardly and bumped.
HARMONIUM BELLS (M Palmer) - Bumped at the start. Steadied when racing keenly into the 1400m turn.
JUNIOR BURGER (T Treichel) – Commenced to yield ground from the 600m and shifted in marginally when under pressure near the 500m contributing to interference of another runner. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer N Dyer was advised that the gelding must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards and pass a veterinary examination prior to racing again.
ROMANESQUE (V Arnott) – Commenced awkwardly and raced wide throughout.
1ST JAVA 2ND DOWNHEARTED 3RD KIFAAH
Race 8: 0-66 1900m
Stewards interviewed trainer/jockey C Spry regarding the riding instructions he intended to issue as his stable had multiple runners in the event.
GRAND TETON (P Shiers) – Raced wide throughout.
WICKED RHYTHM (P Hall) – Raced wide from the 600m.
GENERAL FACTOR (J Cartwright) – Knuckled at the start. Following the unplaced performance a veterinary examination revealed that the mare to have a displaced soft palate. After consulting with the Club veterinarian, trainer M Hickmott will consider gear changes for the mare at its next race start.
1ST YENHAAB 2ND WICKED RHYTHM 3RD SIR GARFIELD
Race 9: Great Northern Darwin Cup 2000m
Stewards interviewed trainer M Hickmott regarding the riding instructions he intended to issue as his stable had multiple runners in the event.
IHTSAHYMN (P Hall) – was involved in a mishap at the stables and sustained abrasions above the right eye and an abrasion to the off hind cannon. After undergoing a veterinary examination at the stables and again after arriving on course the gelding was cleared to compete. Raced wide from the 800m.
EMBLEY (P Denton) – A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off hind leg. Trainer K Petrick was advised that she must present a veterinary clearance for the gelding prior to racing again. She reported the gelding will now be sent for a spell.
POETS LANDING (P Shiers) – Under pressure leaving the 1000m. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have an elevated heart rate and lacerations to both hind pasterns.
LOTION (S Fawke) – Shifted ground outwards under pressure from the 150m.
ROYAL REQUEST (S Tsaikos) – Raced wide throughout.
THAT’S JUSTIFIED (J Todd) – Commenced awkwardly.

Summary
Swab samples were taken from all winners, also LOTION (R9), XEBEC (R9) & HURRY HOME HARRY (R6). Pre race samples were taken from MOSSBELLE, SACAMBAYA, DIVINE RED, VUNIVALU, RESTLESS, JAILHOUSE ROCK, ADATTO, GREYCLIFFE and all runners in race 9.
All riders were breath tested for the detection of alcohol.
