Overview
Sam Hill has dedicated over four decades to the care, retraining, and rehoming of retired racehorses, making her a cornerstone of the Alice Springs Thoroughbred community. Based at Hillbillies Equestrian Centre, Sam has built a premier training facility that welcomes riders of all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned competitors. The Centre offers structured lessons throughout the week and hosts lively club days on Sundays, featuring dressage, jumping, and gymkhana events, creating a vibrant hub for equestrian enthusiasts.
Sam’s journey with Thoroughbreds began in 1979, her dedication and impact were recognised in 2024 when she received the TRNT Off The Track Aftercare Award, which acknowledged her unwavering commitment to Thoroughbred welfare and their success beyond the racetrack.
At the heart of Sam’s work is her tailored approach to retraining, which prioritises the health and well-being of each horse. She collaborates with equine professionals, including chiropractors and massage therapists, to ensure their physical needs are met. Each horse is provided with a customised nutrition plan, carefully adjusted as they progress. This individualised care has enabled many Thoroughbreds to excel in second careers, while others have become integral members of the Hillbillies Equestrian Centre, participating in lessons and club events across a variety of disciplines.
In addition to her work with horses, Sam is a passionate educator. Having served as Chief Instructor of Pony Club for four years, she has mentored countless riders and OTT owners, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to care for and train retired racehorses. Her dedication to both horses and people has made her an invaluable advocate for Thoroughbreds, inspiring others to see their potential and ensure their future beyond the racetrack.
